



Studying Physical Education at Stirling High School
All pupils in S1-S4 will study Physical Education for 2 periods per week. They will participate in a variety of activities including Football, Swimming, Basketball, Dance, Gymnastics, Hockey, Badminton, Table Tennis, Athletics and Softball.
It is also possible for S3/S4 pupils to choose to further their study of Physical Education by choosing Standard Grade Physical Education.
Senior pupils have the opportunity to study Physical Education at Intermediate 2 or Higher level.
Learning in, through and about physical education, physical activity and sport is enhanced by participating on a regular basis in a wide range of purposeful, challenging, progressive and enjoyable physical activities with choice built in for all learners.
Courses
Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport
This course is followed by all pupils in S1-S4. Pupils are introduced to a range of activities providing them with a platform from which they can build physical competencies, improve aspects of fitness and develop and refine the concepts and skills necessary for participation in a wide range of physical activities, sport, dance and outdoor learning and enhances their physical emotional and mental wellbeing in preparation for leading a fulfilling, active and healthy lifestyle.
Pupils will encounter a range of learning experiences in line with level 3 and 4 Experiences and Outcomes in A Curriculum for Excellence.
Standard Grade Physical Education
Current S3/S4 pupils are following the Standard Grade Physical Education curriculum. They participate in a variety of activities that are graded internally and are externally moderated. Pupils sit an external exam at the end of S4 where they will demonstrate knowledge and understanding and evaluating skills developed throughout the course. The activities covered in the Standard Grade course include:
Intermediate 2 / Higher Physical Education
This course is available to pupils in S5/S6, and is a one year course. Performance is the prime focus of the course and pupils are expected to improve performance in two or three selected activities. In addition students are engaged in study to develop their ability to analyse and develop their own performance. The activities covered in the Higher Course are

Practical Performance Unit
Practical Performance Units are available at Int. 1, Int. 2, Higher and Advanced Higher levels. Utilising school-based facilities pupils participate in a range of activities and are expected to improve their skills and techniques within each activity. The course also contributes to the personal and social development of students. Participation is fundamental to success within the course. The activities covered in this course include:
